I took many interesting courses that were necessary for my Bachelor's
of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree and I learned a lot of valuable information while taking these classes. Here is a
description of these courses!
Core Education Courses
- Computers in Education – In this class I learned about computers. I learned how to use Microsoft word and
how to use power point. I also learned how to make a home page and how to make a slide show. All of these have been helpful
in my educational experience.
- Orientation to Education of Exceptional Children – In this class I learned about all the different disabilities
that kids can have. These include gifted, mildly handicapped, severely handicapped, and the bilingual/multicultural and exceptional
children. This class directly applies to what I want to do long term in my career.
- Education Race and Sports- I learned about African American athletes, and the trials and tribulations that they
went through as African Americans and what they had to do in order to play their sports.
- Understanding the Culturally Diverse Child - I learned about different culture and different countries and the
life styles that different people live. This is important because in education kids come from all kinds of backgrounds.
- Culture and Schooling - I learned about the cultural understandings beliefs, attitudes, and values that we learn
at home from our parents. I also learned about the school system and about different cultural definitions that are learned
through mass media. This class was important because it taught me about the school culture.
- Educational Psychology – this class taught me ways to help better myself as a student and a person. I learned
how to manage my money and my time. This class was most applicable to real life.
Core Sociology Courses
- Modern Social Problems- This class focused on common problems in
society. I learned a lot about how society functions and how most societies create there own problems based on the norms and
values they set.
- Sociology of Work – in this class professor Whitaker taught us about the role that work, plays in society.
The different theory of why people work and what jobs they choose was very interesting.
- Sociology of Law - I learned about crime and its place in society. I studied the jail sentences people get for
certain crimes and how those crimes in society.
- Sociology of Crime - I learned about crime and why individuals commit
crime and ways to prevent crime. I also learned about the different theories and research that has been done on crime. This
class complemented the information I learned in my Sociology of Law class.
- Introduction to Sociology - I learned about the basic building blocks
of society and what is considered to be a norm and a value. This was the first SOC class I took at ASU and this class got
me interested in Sociology.
- Research Methods – I learned about different research methods. I learned how to conduct studies and how
to pick out independent and dependent variables. I also learned about observational methods. All of these knowledge helped
me to write my first statistical research paper.
